Sir - one of the things I hope is that leaving the military will not diminish your wish to serve your community, albeit there are a hundred ways to do this, and the navy is but one. I've seen successful tubers become rather self-absorbed, and the scope of their concern diminish, and I hope that shall not happen to yourself. Great podcasts, Katelyn Ohashi was specifically good. Salutations from Europe.

Everyone is different, for me literally it felt I was losing my mind, being in the navy was killing me, 1st classes and chiefs that ranked up SOLELY based on their knowledge and not based on their character and leadership traits. I was depressed while I was in and always questioned the fact that leaders in the Navy never actually lead, they truly slaved me to do all the grunt work (painting, chipping the paint, laying non skid chipping non skid, grinding rust 24/7). Whereas in construction, which I did before, your Foreman would work with you and out work alot of newbies. To me personally I felt sad that a 20 year chief in the Navy cant read a simple tape measure vs a 20 year construction worker could build a house by themselves. Like what exactly do you honestly achieve in the Navy once you you reach E 7 in your satisfied rate? Yes you learn your rate but you are not constantly being tested on it, unless you are spec ops. I feel once you are an E5 or E6 then you are just a baby sitter. And that is what stresses me out man! These E5 and above baby sitters with no leadership skills get paid way more than someone who works a very hard job (mechanic, landscaper, firefighter, concrete laborer) with an honest days of work!and that is why I got out, i feel that i needed an honest days work with an honest days living. I will say though the benefits are nice GI bill and all is great and I did meet my wife in the Navy so it wasn't too bad but it really opened my eyes on my morals in my life... thanks for reading this novel lol

Hey Austen.. I really like your domain in U Tube. A huge Attaboy from me. I am a retired Cop from Riverside County Sheriff CA. Also spent 7 years as a Senior Criminal Investigator with the Washington State Attorney General. I medically retired, due to on the job injury with severe disc/nerve damage. After nearly 20 years total on the job, been retired since 1997. Anyway, having been assigned to background investigation for lateral and entry level Deputy Sheriffs. I am not certain, however had you given thought to remaining in S. CA and trying out for a Peace Officer position. Austen, you have the right attributes and experience for such a position. The pay and benefits are top notch and speaking from experience, it is a job that you would love. Very satisfying and rewarding. You might give it a thought. Anyway, I enjoy your videos and your positive attitude. Take care my friend.

Unless your making around 80k then your going to be quite far from the fitness centers of California less your willing to drive a lot to get by. Just my two cents. Santa Maria/Lompoc would be affordable, but I don't know about work. I imagine Huntington Beach would be expensive as hell. My second home base is Ventura and my first being Contra Costa County. Shits expensive unless your making a lot.

Only you know what's best for you. I did four years in the Coast Guard and learned a lot from that experience; but I decided that it wasn't what I wanted for the long term. I got out in 1982 when the economy stunk, and guys in the Guard were telling me I would be back. after doing a couple of different jobs I found my passion. I got a 2 year criminal justice degree, and then did 23 years at a great police department. My advise to you is stay in the Navy if you like it, but don't settle for it because it's convenient. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I was an infantry Marine during peacetime. I did 6 years on active duty and we were deployed a LOT. For me, the best option was to get out after my enlistment and go to college. Getting out or staying in is a very personal decision. Neither option is right or wrong. It just depends on your life situation. If you decide to get out, be prepared to hit an emotional wall after a few months where you start to think you’ve made a mistake to leave the military. It happened to me and all my friends. To keep from falling prey to the negative emotions, just make sure you have a solid plan BEFORE you get out. Starting a business takes YEARS to get off the ground unless you have a significant amount of money to invest up front. Even then, it takes time and you may not see positive revenue for a year or so after you’ve put out your shingle. I saw quite a few of my buddies get out with no plan and just drift through life with no goals, no mission, and no prospects. All of them were very depressed and struggled a lot just to keep their sanity. It’s tough to go from the military where you have a mission to just working a job to scratch together rent money. It leaves young people feeling like their lives are meaningless. You seem to realize this already and are thinking ahead to the future. So... if you have a plan for life outside the military, execute that plan. If December rolls around and things haven’t quite come together yet, reenlist for another tour and keep plugging away at your dreams. True story: I was selected for an Officer program in the Marines and decided to turn it down. My battalion commander at the time said, “Hey, that’s great! I’ve been getting out of the military since I was a Lieutenant!” He started as a rifle platoon commander in Vietnam and he retired decades later as a 3 Star General. His name was Mastin Robeson. He loved his troops and took great care of us. Whatever you do, I know you’ve got a plan and you’ll make it happen. Good luck, Austen, and tell your cousin Joey that he’s a HOOT! :-)

I wish I would have stayed in. Got out, went to college, and the suck is just every where you go. At least in the Navy you have a pretty clear path forward. When you see all your friends make rank a few years later but you haven't done shit, it's like fuck; should have just stayed where I was.

Happiness is fickle and it changes all of the time. Pursue your opportunities, not your passion. 90% of the time passion leads to dead ends. Wanting a flawless life is a dream and will never happen, life is messy. I would recommend staying in and going for retirement because things could fall apart quickly. Sometimes taking what you love and making it your job/money-maker can lead one to disliking that thing because now they "have" to do it instead of "want" to do it. Maybe keep fitness as the hobby you love and do competitions instead of making it your job. Be careful. Sorry if my comment is late.

Yes, you are about 1 year now from that date now, I was in the Army for 3+ year and reserve time, was in Germany for 3 years, I got out, came home, and could only find a job paying $4.50 an hour in CA, so I decided to join the Navy, as an OSVET (Other Service Vet) had to go to boot camp again, so 2 boot camps, and 2 military schools, was a YN2, I was in a P-3 Squadron in Moutain View, CA NAS Moffett Field, then shore duty same base Wing Ten, then applied for LN Legalman school, once I was graduated in Rhone Island, my orders were to a ship, back to CA the USS Carl Vision, but was given Ship for 4 years or get out. So I decided to get out, I loved being a YN, would have stated for 20, but back then the chances of making rank were hard, I traveled a lot with the P-3 squadron, so I did not need to travel anymore, but it was a good decision for me to get out, and have had a good life. You have to make that decison for yourself,

That's cool that you have Dwight Schrute for your cousin, lol. Anyway, thank you for your service. I'm an Army Vet myself. Making the choice to leave the military is a hard one, just as making the decision to enter it is something that should be thought out. Whatever you decide to do I'm pretty sure you're gonna be more than ok. The military lifestyle is not an easy one and just because you join doesn't necessarily mean you want to spend 20 or 30 years there. You've done what only a small percentage of the population has done by your service. Your service will always be a part of who you are no matter what else you decide going forward.

I did 8 years 1997-2005 in the Navy, but after 9/11 I wasn't doing my job as an Operations Specialist at the Naval war College Newport, RI programming "war games" on a Linux based system. The Base security was so badly manned. They called-in reservists and pulled enlisted like me from the different buildings on property to assist. It didn't take long for the MAs to start taking advantage of not putting other MAs out at a gate for 12 hours and making us "Auxiliary Security Force" do the crappy posts. I got out, because every couple of months My War Gaming Department starting screwing me over and sending back out with the MAs again, because "I am single, and have no kids". Basically being bias and catering to people who have "lives". So instead of reenlisting I got out. Money was great, wish I sucked it up and stayed in. But can't go back now.
Norma Ortizwebb
Norma Ortizwebb Год назад
You sound like you have had a much more colorful enlistment than I did. And yet you still want to get out as i did. That reinforces that my decision was a good one. I have often wondered how different my life would be had i stayed in. It was hard to start out my life as a civilian again but it was so worth it.

You won’t own the business - the business will own you. Stay in. You will be glad when that 20 year mark comes and you decided to stay. ( Retired from Army.) Short-term you may like civilian life. Long-term? Most that got out wished they’d stayed in. Civilian life sucks with little job security, fewer and fewer benefits, and working with people who do not share your military values. Better re-think California too. It’s on the road to ruin.

I did 3 1/2 years active and 20 in reserves, retired in 1998. Reservists don't get our pension and Tricare till we hit age 60, but after that, the money comes in every month and tricare covered healthcare till age 65 when medicare kicked in. Then Tricare Life covered all my copays. My wife has tricare prime, $650.00/year and her copays are almost nothing. Like a $250.00 scrip and we pay like $5 or $6 bucks. Visits to primary care physician for wife cost zilch. And when I'm dead, she's still covered till she's dead as long as she never remarries. I told her, just get a boyfriend but hold onto those med bene's or I'll come back from the dead and haunt her. I just love the thought of retirement bene's even after I'm dead.

You can pursue your passion and be in the Navy at the same time. You are outstanding in RUrun because you are a Navy guy who has the Captain American's look. You make Navy look cool. But Navy also makes you look cool. You mention you wanna help people through fitness. Here you already have a great platform (in fishing we have a saying "don't leave fish to find fish"). Tons of fitness guys are trying to make it out there everyday. When it comes to inspiring people you can not beat a fitness guy in the uniform. The better of the two parts that makes Captain America famous is his heart. His muscle just magnifies it. It is vital to keep one's passion and happiness. Before leaving try to solve the issues that you have with an open mind. Talk to your superiors who might understand what you are doing. There are codes of conduct. And rules of engagement apply also in the office. You gotta know where the lines are and things will be easier. I am from a country where the military often assume power over the elected government. The US military helped save my region from being governed by the communist in the 60s. They kicked the badass guys away from here and anywhere. I am thankful and proud of the US Military. They are some of the most sensible in the world. You remind me of the brave solders who fight for these causes. I would be so proud if I were you. People need hero. I think you are doing a great job here in that respect.

Hey Brotha, Not a big youtube comment guy. I'm a MA2 that just left San Diego (Point Loma) and transferred to NSF Bahrain. Damn does this resonate with me. I was just talking to my wife saying the exact same thing. Except I referred to it as my purpose. I respect what us MA's do, I'm good at it, but I don't like it. This is a tough and scary decision to make. But people get out of the military all the time, I am sure some of the salty dogs will tell you to stay in, but I know leaders that support us getting out, because they know we will be ok. God bless you man, Ive watched your Bahrain video a few times to prepare for this journey. Wish I reached out to you when I was still in California.

Dude, in this day and age you’ve got to think of the bigger picture, that being what your goals and dreams are. Leaving the military isn’t the end of the world, it’s a chance to realise and work on your true passion. If Plan A doesn’t workout then you know that you can always re-enlist, at least that’s a safety net of sorts. My advice? I used to be an RN (registered nurse), I went back to University to study medicine and become a doctor. I’m a UK doctor, so I work for the NHS (National Health Service). I was working part time as an RN throughout my medical studies, needed the money. In my 4th year of med school (medicine in the UK is a minimum of 5 years), I stopped working as a nurse and left the nursing register, in effect I was burning my bridges so the only way for me was forward. I guess what I’m saying here is, if you really want to make fitness your goal you might need to burn your bridges with the military. I’m not suggesting you get thrown out, but once you’ve left just don’t look back and keep inching forward. Whatever happens, I really wish all the very best for in your future career in fitness.
